More about corrections in Virginia

Virginia is a commonweath but it's criminal justice system is like that of most other states. There is a high concentration of regional jails, some are shared facilities to reduce costs and contract beds to the state and other counties. The VADOC is in charge of housing felony offenders and has an online inmate locator. FACT: William Stone was appointed the first sworn sheriff in America by becoming the sheriff of Accomack County, Virginia in 1634. Thanks to Andy Delbridge for his site on Virginia Jails that helped make the jail affiliations understandable.
